What are you doing for water? I just had WA-2 install some hot/cold filter water systems at work and they told me they have a counter top tank smaller then a microwave that does the same job. I am definately considering it.

bought mr.friendly's roaster and have now put together a simple roasting station. the fan is zip tied to the shelf. the bags below are sumatra and rwandan. the device on the left is a vacuum sealer.

As a lover of coffee and food I have to add something I found while in Mexico.

It's called Cafe de Olla and the best place I found that serves it is a place in Coyoacan, Mexico City DF, called Cafe El Jarocho.

Que bueno!

those are 20lbs bags. last bag lasted 10 months. these will last 6-8 months. they stay fresh much longer in this state. some beans literally go through hell to get here. the rwandan was trucked across several african countries.

machine on right is behmor(further right is a vacuum ). i just ordered a pod maker and will be doing some pods for a few people too.(not tassimo). a cheap burr grinder is probably going to kick the bucket a lot earlier. they are usually made of lesser quality materials. mid-high quality like my Vario use ceramic which in this case does not degrade much. if you are buying bagged beans try to at least find the roast date on it. i never buy anything over a week old.

i stopped using valves as their purpose is just to keep bags from expanding too much in a store. co2 gasses from fresh roasts have zero negative effect on coffee and in fact is shown to preserve it. i vacuum seal all my coffee, that sealer came with a container that i can vacuum seal.

i started a membership of sorts mainly to pay for the beans. when i send coffee it is vacuum packed. i have found air is the worst enemy of coffee. by sealing it after every use my coffee tastes better and for longer. i send these vacuum sealed beans as far as Winnipeg and none have blown up yet.

i brew with a chemex, bodum colombia, and a aeropress. hope to replace my broken bodum santos one day.

well, I just got my new coffee equipment, considering of the Bonavita Porcelain Immersion Dripper, the pour stand (which is actually too small for the wide mouth dripper, as I have just found out...guess I'll get a Vario 60 now) and the Bonavita scale, which is good for up to 3KG, but can be as sensitive as 0.1g.

scale:

dripper:

stand:

edit - and if anyone is looking for a first rate coffee machine and isn't afraid to spend $200, this is one of the few SCAA certified machines:

Feels like it, though the conversation may of just moved to another thread ...

Good stuff Mr. Friendly. 200$ isn't that bad considering what people spend on Brevelle/Cuisinart/Kitchen-aid/Keurig, especially since it doesn't suck (which most drippers do).

if someone wants to buy a good drip coffee maker, there really are only two choices (there are more, but they're crazy expensive):

1) Bonavita BV1900TS:
http://bonavita.ca/bonavita_8_cup_coffee_maker_bv1900ts.htm

2) Technivorm KBT741:
http://www.technivorm.com/products/brewers_for_home-use/kbgt_741_polished_silver/

The Bonavita runs for about $200 and comes with a 2 year warranty.

The Technivorm is about $300 and comes with 5 years of warranty.

just so you closet coffeegeek's know...

Isn't one of you in Edmonton (Mr. Friendly)?
Perhaps you could talk to the landlord and see if he'll also give you the space for free

i am. the owner of transcend is a moron. he thought he could corner the green bean and roasting business in edmonton and failed. he still charges far too much for something other businesses do far cheaper. his clientele are for the most part clueless. the only reason he makes money is because his main store is located in one of the best locations in edmonton.

as for the space he is leaving downtown. awful location for what he sells. the clientele are there but the rents there could never support that kind of business. also he has never advertised that store anywhere. everyone i know in the industry has little or no respect for him.

I've only made one cup of coffee with mine so far, but it definitely made a big difference. My Costa Rican Tarrazu, which is already a smooth coffee, is smoooootttth after running it through the Kruve.

I did a VERY quick tune on my grinder as I was doing my test run and still need to mess with it a bit more before I'll be happy with the granule size distribution.

what's your grinder, AR?

I've got the original Baratza Vario. if I ever have the $$$, I will upgrade to the Forte AP...

My electric grinder is a Baratza Maestro. I also have a Hario MSS-1 hand grinder, and I was playing around with that a bit last night with the Kruve. Interestingly, there doesn't seem to be much difference between the two in the amount of "waste". What I've ended up doing with the Hario to get good yields was to set the grind to the point where I got a lot of boulders, but not much fine, and then I would run the boulders through the grinder again. A bit time-consuming, but kind of worth it for the increase in yield.
