Hey er'body,

Started playing and streaming PUBG, having a ton of fun and the channel is growing. However my system is being throttled by my RAM. When I open task manager while gaming & streaming, Physical Memory is often between 95-99%. Currently running:

Intel i5 4690 i 3.5GHz not overclocked.
Gigabyte Z97x Gaming 5
2x 8GB of RAM
GeForce GTX 970

Wanting to upgrade the ram with another 16 gigs. Does it make sense to buy 2x 16GB (32) sticks or add another 2x 8 for a total of 4. I have vague memories of a friend telling me that 4 sticks run better than 2.

Also, does all RAM work with any MOBO? Or is there something that I need to pay attention to when buying?

Thanks,

CP

Your i5 is the problem when gaming + streaming.

Ram upgrade will not be much help, when your CPU can not do both equally well.
You need an i7 or new Ryzen 5/7. As you need the cores to handle

With my current setup, does it make sense to upgrade my CPU and RAM alone?

This doesn't necessarily mean that you are out of RAM. Your system will typically keep as many programs loaded into RAM as possible to speed up their loading. If a game requires more memory, it will unload some of these cached programs to make room.

I have to agree with Spork. Encoding the video output for streaming is probably limited by the CPU.

What would you recommend for upgrades on RAM and CPU for under $500?

I have no recommendations under $500.

Your CPU's line has been discontinued, so unless you can find a 4770k or 4970 on the used market, you're looking at upgrading the CPU, memory, and motherboard all at once.

For gaming + streaming you are better off with Ryzen
