Folks,

Looking for some CPU advice here,I built a computer a few years back based on the Asus M5A99FX PRO R2.0 - been doing a bit of gaming on it.

Wondering if it would be worth it to upgrade the CPU (FX-4300) to the FX-8320 or just continue to save up for a new build. Not planning on doing a build for at least 4 - 6 months, but been noticing that the system gets really sluggish playing games like boarder lands.

The rig is:
AMD FX4300
Asus M5A99FX PRO
16GB G Skill DDR3 800mhz
Samsung EVO 850

hey pcamp, what GPU do you have? what's your power supply? what OS? what games do you play?

the platform you have has been replaced by the newer Ryzen 3, 5, and 9 (aka Threadripper) and it may be better to save a bit more money to buy a new Ryzen CPU, Mobo and RAM. you can definitely reuse your SSD...probably your GPU, depending on a few factors.

the new Ryzen 3 1300X is about $175 and is a full quad core CPU. mobo's that let you overclock start at about $130 (get one using the B350 chipset). RAM is a bit more difficult due to shortages.

Running 7950s in crossfire, 750watt, Windows 10 Pro, and I play Leauge, CS:Go/CS:S, Boarderlands, Left for Dead ...but I'd probably argue I'm gaming more and more so in my next build I'm thinking of going a little higher end.

I'm guessing I should just continue to save up until I'm ready to pull trigger.

hey pcamp, yeah, probably best to save up as even those GPU's are long in tooth...checking performance, they're comparable to the current GTX 1050 Ti, which is an entry level gaming GPU...second from the bottom actually, beating the GTX 1050 non-Ti.

Thanks - I've been out of the hardware game for a while, I'll end up posting specs before I build.

If you can just drop  the 8320 in its not a bad idea if you can get the chip for under $100, Ideally about 50-75

Those games are CPU intensive, so more cores of a bulldozer cpu isn't gonna make much of a difference, you need more IPC (instructions per cycle) so an intel CPU would help the most, however a ryzen CPU would also help.

But those 7950's should be able to run those games just fine.

I'd think an SSD would help for overall speediness.

Thanks for the tips guys!

Think I'm going to a new build - likely the better option, I have a evo 850 to use as my primary and then I could put my games on an older patriot pyro ...then other applications on internal drives :)

You're pretty much in a catch 22, keep saving for Zen 2 6 core / 12 thread variant in beginning of 2018 or intel will have some interesting i5s with 6 cores coming up the next intel xxxxlake iteration i3 is supposed to be 4 core also.

There is an Athlon x4 950 (based on Excavator)that goes on am4 mobos incase you get impatient $70 then you can bump up to the Zen 2 later and sell off all your am3+ stuff.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPzxOrl7rRM
