Hi,

I was wanting to do an upgrade or two to my system. I use system mostly for playing Armored Warfare and surfing the net.

Here is my current system:
- ASUS H97-PLUS ATX DDR3 Motherboard LGA1150 ATX
- Intel Core i5 I5-4460 Haswell 3.2GHZ Processor LGA1150 6MB Cache
- Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo Direct Touch 4 Heatpipe
- EVGA Supernova 750 G2 80 Plus Gold Fully Modular Power Supply
- 2 X Crucial MX100 256GB SATA 6Gbps 150/550MB/S 2.5”
- Kingston Hyperxfury Memory Red 16GB 4X4GB DDR3-1866 CL10 Dual Channel Memory Kit
- CLUB3D Radeon R9 285 Royal Queen 945MHZ 2GB 5.5GHZ GDDR5 2xDVI HDMI DisplayPort PCI-E

I like to play with graphics on 'ultra' but I had to go back to 'very high' because FPS was getting too low. I was looking at getting a new video card but the nVidias are as usual way too overpriced, they think their cards are gold ffs. The AMDs seem better priced but there are just too many versions of each version. I was thinking about crossfire but that seems like a waste of a video card unless both are the same or very close to the same. I found a R9 285 but it is $300, don't get that at all, $100 more than when I bought it 3 years ago. Same with CPUs, figured the i7s would be down in price but even the old i7s are more than the new i5s....

What would be a good upgrade to get some more FPS out of the system? My video card is running at full speed when gaming, I think I read somewhere they are supposed to do that to get max FPS, and my CPU is at 80-95% when gaming.

I was looking at the RX 560 - RX 580s as the nVidias are overpriced. The only one that looks appealing is the 6GB 1060, is that better than the RX 560-580? The 560s dont seem like much at under $200 but is it a big difference over the R9 285? Would I see a big difference using the RX 580 over the 285? Or is my motherboard/CPU a bottleneck?

Any suggestions appreciated. I am hoping there is an upgrade out there somewhere that will make life gaming a little more sexy!!!

Thanks.

PS. I am looking for a cheapish MB/CPU/RAM combo for Dad, all he does is edit a few pictures and surf internet so don't need anything special. SSD will be installed as that is only way to go these days for booting up. And I will put my R9 285 in there if I get a new card.

Try picking up an R9 290x/390x for around $200. A R9 285 wrecks an RX 560, I have the 560 it's a weak little card. I just wanted something to play league that was better than onboard so I went with that. Card prices are high because of cryptocurrency mining and there's also a lot of stock shortage hence higher prices on new and old hardware. Also there's still the GTX 970 that can be found around $200, that's a great card still. GTX 970 and R9 290x would be about 50% stronger than your current card.

Here is a heirarchy chart, you'd basically want to move up 2 tiers, so right around the gtx 970/r9 290x spot for an 'upgrade'.

Oh, I didn't realize the RX 560 was that low on the list, I was looking at that last night and thought the 560 was up with the 570 and 580. Oh well, it is off the list to look out for. If I can get the RX 580 for a decent price that would be a decent upgrade though wouldn't it? I was reading the miners were gone nuts over a new currency and got the prices drove up. It was going to be my Christmas gift, now I dunno what to get.

Thanks.

You are not getting a R9 290X for $200, they are just as expensive as the R9 580s or more. Couple of morons looking for almost $2K for one. You can find a 1050 for about $200 but the 970s are $400+. I found a R9 285 on NCIX US for $299.99US, goddamnit that is $385CAN, about twice what I paid for one three years ago. Something wrong there, they just jacked the price up, not because of demand because there is zero demand for an R9 285, but because they could get away with it. There are even some assholes charging $400+ for a cooler for an R9 280X, you can get same cooler at any online store for less than $100. The current cards go up because everyone wants them, not the old ones, NCIX US just being dicks about it and trying to gouge more money from people. Charging the same price for an old ancient card as the new current cards makes you an idiot. NCIX Canada is charging $100 more per video card than any other Canadian store, guess NCIX is REALLY gouging you. Must be the chinese running the shit show out there in hongcouver!!!!

Do NOT buy a video card now or you WILL be ripped off. And NEVER buy anything else from NCIX, they are a rip off as you will see if you check other Canadian stores for same cards, NCIX charges much, much more than anyone else.

I was told NCIX was the best place to come get help, but I guess since the store is failing, most topics in this forum are on that subject now, no one wants to help anymore. I was told give it a day or two and you will have several options listed for you. Lmao, guess not. This place is not what it was cracked up to be!

superFLINT you win the Moron award.

Go find a site that sells new 3 generation old GPUs for cheap. Come back admit what a moron you are. If you are a real man that is....

Stores dont just unload stuff for cheap because its old. Are you 8yrs old?

Go find a new 780ti and tell us how cheap it is.

I am not defending NCIX at all, this is only to point out what an idiot you are. And racist. Are we allowed to tell people there are pills you can take, called cyanide.

Read your own post and tell us if that is what a human being worth any oxygen would write.

Moron.

Here's the straight poop, you've got enough ram.

Your cpu isn't horrible but if you dug up an i7 4790 all the better.

Where you're really hurting is the R9 285 2GB which is much the same as GTX960/1050ti in DX11 and DX12 the 285 pretty much roughly the same as 1050ti because of the 285s GCN, you can find the GTX1060 6GB around for $330ish CDN and the Rx 580 Armor 8GB for $350cdn either of those will do BUT if you play JC3 definitely GTX 1060 just because JC3 has a stuttering problem with AMD gpus Digital Foundries did a slew of tests showing it and I've seen it too having a bunch of GPUs 1060/580/280x/1070 to play with JC3 is the only complaint I have against the Rx 580.

Get a gpu 1st then keep an eye out for an i7 4790, if you can swing a GTX 1070 sure go for it mine just cost $530+tax ouch.

it's back and forth with the 1060 vs 580.

Ahh the idiot award goes to....YOU, jakeElwood!

Really, stores do not unload stuff for cheap just because it is old? Actually, yes they do, imagine that!!! Are you 8 years old? Man you are stupid. I just bought a couple sets of speakers that were $500/pair 2 months ago, now the new version is out and they are selling off the old ones for $129.99 now. Stores have sales all the time to get rid of old stock and the savings are significant. I dunno what rock you are living under.

The world is filled with idiots like you and the world caters to the stupid like you. If evolution had a say instead of all the social programs that promote laziness and stupidity, you would have been dead for years as you would have no idea how to survive on your own!!! You would not need cyanide to finish you off, it would happen from your natural stupidity. Im not racist, just telling the truth!!!

You are back without prices on the GPUs.

Prove anything you have said. Prove that its only Chinese people that are dicks about money. Prove that you can buy new 3 gen old GPUs for cheap.

I wasnt talking about speakers which are not the same thing remotely.

What you said is wrong. Can you can be a man and admit it?

Back to the topic at hand....sorry that this had degenerated into a flame war which has been low prior to the troubles that have come lately to NCIX on this board. What monitor and resolution are you running at plus what games are you looking to increase your ffs? That will help determine what card needs to be recommended.

I wouldn't dismiss nVidia so quickly. Crytomining has typically driven up the cost of AMD cards higher than nVidia so there is some value there. Look up "GPU ranking" on Google to see where cards typically stack up against each other. Older generation cards can be harder to find and that sometimes drives up their price due to supply vs. demand.

For your father, I would suggest an H270 motherboard, I3-8100 or even Pentium G4400 and your choice of DDR4 at 8-16GB of RAM in a two stick format (2x4GB or 2x8GB). Sounds like his demands are pretty low for a system.

My last post did not go through or got deleted.

I am running a Dell S2309W monitor p 1920X1080 and play Armored Warfare, cryengine I think. I am getting 60FPS but not at ultra settings which I would like. I am looking at the RX 580 8GB and the 1060 6GB. Roughly the same price, but still a little pricey, hoping for a black Friday sale but I doubt that will happen, at least not a good one. Looking hard at the ASUS ROG STRIX RX 570 too, $100 cheaper but only 4GB and slower clocks and stuff, but still prolly a big upgrade from the R9 295.

Dad only uses his computer to do some photo editing and watching a few videos on youtube. We got him an iPad for christmas and he goes nuts on that. The old Dell he uses now is just crazy slow, first gen i3 I think. I was going to get some RAM and a SSD to see what that does to it, but I figure upgrade all of it.

Thanks.

Used gtx970/gtx780ti or r290/x would be double the speed of the r9 285 and are a decent price. Seeing them for just over 200$ when they come up.

It is not a good time to buy GPUs sadly.

4gb is plenty for the range of GPU you are looking at. If you had a high-end 2-3k 120hz+ monitor and a high-end CPU, you could worry more about GPU ram.

There will most likely not be any sales. The margins are nothing and the demand is massive.

K-series CPU to OC and a decent GPU and you have a very good PC.

Next would be the monitor but its OK if you are.

lol wtf. GTX 970s and R9 290/x are going for about $225-$250 easily buyable for $200. Way better than any new card you could buy for the same amount.

Not gonna find a new for those prices, more like $600-700 for a new R9 290X. If you know for a new one for $250 put the link here. I am bidding on this now, ASUS R9 290X 4GB GDDR5 watercooled w Noctua NF-F12 on eBay, https://www.ebay.ca/itm/ASUS-R9-290X-4GB-GDDR5-watercooled-w-Noctua-NF-F12-for-Gaming-and-Crypto-Mining/202101865222?hash=item2f0e35bb06:g:zB4AAOSwzSRZ2jHd&autorefresh=true, up to $155 already. Might be at the limit for a used card for me.

I was looking at the price history of the RX 580 and I can get one for $299 now, $323 for the RX 580. The release price on the 580 was only $260-270, so $299 not that bad really. I guess? The only site I can find for price history is ca.pcpartpicker.com and they say the history of the 580 is about what it is now. I must be missing something?

Hopefully I can get the R9 290X on eBay for less than $200, even though I hate buying second hand electronics. I am expecting bad things to go wrong

Thanks for info for Dads new computer too, CPU $50 and MB ~$130, lol.

New old graphics cards are always expensive in the extreme. Dont even bother looking.

Used is what we are talking about.

There are other/better sites than ebay. Join them and post there.

There are enough people here left to help guide you but quite an influx of degenerates also.

Release price for 580 was never 270$can.

You wont get a 290x for under 200$. Those will be 250$ or so.

GTX970 is probably the best one to look out for(newer and less chance of being mined with hourly, daily, for years). Otherwise as we all pretty much posted the same cards, any of them are good for you and just over 200$ used.

I have no idea what sites you are talking about.

I hate used, damn. What was release price for 580 then? PC Gamer said release MSRP of RX 580 was $229US which is $290CAD, prolly 4GB version. 4GB version going for $300 right now, $10 more. PC Gamer lists the 970 as the best FPS/$ and the 1080Ti as the worst FPS/$. Thats neither here nor there, all to do with cost though. PC Gamer claims the 580 is 20% faster than the 970 and the 970 came up short on 60FPS in 11 of 18 games tested where the 580 was 4 short out of 18 games at 60FPS.

The R9 290X is now at $200! I will drive whoever is bidding against me to pay up! :)

I am now looking for 970s on eBay too!

Might have a chance for a brand new RX 580 4GB for $250 all in, that must be better than a 290X for same price?

I wouldn't touch a GTX 970 with a ten foot pole especially at the prices you're quoting.

The Rx 570 is around the GTX 970 and GTX 1060 3GB at 1080p gaming a 1060 3GB would be fine if you can't afford the 1060 6GB or Rx 580 8GB, sure if the Rx 580 4GB is in your budget reach go for it.

No idea why you wouldnt touch a 970. Your math on the cards is right though.

MeY,

A 580 is 7% faster than a 290X. The 9 and the X give it more power than the 8 in the 580 but the 5 brings the power up. Confused yet?

290, 970, 780ti, gtx1060 3gb are all similar. So you would be looking at the new 1060 3gb price vs the used price on the others. 1060 3gb best of that group.

rx 480, 290x, r9 390(x), gtx980, rx 580 and gtx1060 6gb are all similar. 580 and 1060 6gb best of that group.

Cards get expensive after those. Fury (X), 980ti, 1070.

At 1920x1080 i wouldnt worry too much about 4gb being too small. 6gb might best for future proof, 8gb is 2gb too much really.

Lost the auction on the 290X. His last bid was after the ebay auction closed but he still won it, weird. He won it for ~$250CAN. Seems like a lot when I can get the 580 for $325 brand new, maybe $300 with the big black Friday sales to come! $50-75 does not seem like much, with it being 7% faster and all new with warranty, but still more than it should be I guess.

Is that how the numbering system works? lmao

What other sites were you talking about for second hand cards?

If I can get the 580 for $300 all in I think I will go for it. Going through eBay listings is getting on me nerves, just too many people price gouging, non working cards for parts, etc. The 1060 seems nice but that is $400 minimum for 6GB.

This has become a bigger pain in the ass than I expected, damn miners, might just say screw it :(

The Rx, 580 8GB is creeping up again $$.

HWC is a good forum to sign up to.

I still see zotac 1060 6GB $329 elsewhere.

Well Im giving up on the video card, pain in the ass and prices ****ed.

I have this put together to buy for a build for the old man.
ASUS H110M-E/M.2 LGA 1151 Intel H110 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 Micro ATX Motherboards - Intel
Intel Pentium G4400 Skylake Dual-Core 3.3 GHz LGA 1151 54W BX80662G4400 Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 510
G.SKILL Aegis 8GB 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2133 (PC4 17000) Intel Z170 Platform / Intel X99 Platform
Crucial MX300 2.5" 275GB SATA III 3D NAND Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
CORSAIR CX-M Series CX450 450W 80 PLUS BRONZE Haswell Ready ATX12V & EPS12V Semi-modular Power Supply

I am wondering if all components are going to play well together?

His old computer was a Dell Inspiron 580 with i3 550 w 3.2 GHz. Is that CPU better than the G4400?

Thanks for the help!!!

Only video card I could find reasonable is the PowerColor RED DRAGON Radeon RX 570 DirectX 12 AXRX 570 4GBD5-3DHD/OC 4GB 256-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 for $254 minus a $20 mail in rebate which I will probably just toss in the garbage as I have never gotten one of those back. Greg even said he would help on last one but after I gave info he ignored me thereafter. Decent card for price?

If you're building a new budget build steer towards the coffee lake i3 8100 or ryzen 1200/1300 all being 4 core cpus. The Gs/older skylake, kaby lake i3s are 2 core / 4 threads a thing of the past.

Have you ever used pcpartpicker.com set region to Canada, and don't forget about Mike.
