Subject: $1000 Gaming PC Build - Oh man

Its been some time since I have enjoyed my own gaming rig. As a single guy with a mortgage, I am limiting myself at a hard cap of $1000 pre-tax for a build - ideally I want to get to $1000 all inclusive of taxes. The below is what I have put together thus far - I will not gain from having "gaming level" parts as they are outside my budget and I don't need to play anything at 4k resolution, I am happy at standard high def resolutions. I am interested in your thoughts - is there any flags you see, can I get away with anything less expensive. My thought process on the GPU and CPU is to get me into today's games at decent quality levels and will allow me to continue using it over the next few years at successfully lower quality ratings as new games come along as I I don't foresee freeing up additional cash to make decent interval upgrades.

Silverstone Grandia GD09 HTPC Case ($85)
AMD RYZEN 5 1500X Processor ($249)
GIGABYTE Radeon RX 580 Gaming ($350)
ASUS Prime A320M-K AMD RYZEN AM4 ($81)
Mushkin Enhanced Redline 16GB 2x8GB ($190)
Seasonic S12II-620 Bronze 620W ($65)
Already have a 1TB Seagate 7200RPM hard drive from a friend ($0)
Have all my accessories (keyboard, mouse, etc) from a friend ($0)

I have chosen an HTPC style case to fit into my TV cabinet as space is of a premium in my small condo. I play a bit of everything in terms of my game habits
- Call of Duty, Battlefield, Ghost Recon, Arma 3, Mass Effect
- Stellaris, Hearts of Iron, Starcraft 2, Age of Empires 4 (when it comes out), Civilization, etc

The board you want is the B350 with 1500x
More PCI-e lanes and OC capable.

You'll also want an SSD with your system.

Thanks Spork for your feedback. An SSD is on my "want" list. As I already have a 1TB HDD 7200rpm, I may settle for that for now to get going within my budget. An SSD might be an upgrade for me next year or perhaps if I can sell some old stuff around my storage in the shorter future.

I do have a 250GB SSD in my laptop that I can use as I have an old 2.5 HDD I can throw in the laptop somewhere around here, but I have to do some research on the laptop ssd to see if there is any major deficiency in a laptop version that would hinder it against the 1TB HDD or if it is still better. Kind of like in the old days when you'd grab a 7200rpm instead of a 5400rpm. Because I certainly love the boot up time of the ssd in the laptop.

May be months before the RX 580 is in stock, so many cryptominers are scoopign them up before they hit shelves. A used GTX 970 would be a good one, find them around $200. Equal performance.

Thanks computer guru, I had no idea about the supply drain by bitcoin miners. I remember when foldnhome was popular (i recall there being a large community here for that) but I guess a lot of folks globally have turned to turning a profit on the coins. I will look at the used market for previous generations to assist with my goal.

No problem, I say GTX 970 and not R9 290x/390x because those 2 cards people are trying to sell to cryptominers for like $350+ a pop when they were only at $200 and below a few months ago, GTX 970's though, I checked vancouver area, saw a few ads around the the $200 mark. Help save ya like $150 right there. Maybe step up to an RX 1700 or perhaps find a GTX 980 for $300 ish.

oh btw, here's a bench tool you can use to compare ...

Purchased the HTPC case from NCIX and should be arriving in a few days

Was able to get a GTX970 from Kijiji for 175.

Slowly getting there. Going to see what tomorrows sale has for remaining parts
