It ultimately doesn't really matter but you should be able to change the mounting system to be the other way. If you watch a YouTube video of an install it may show you what you are missing when placing the mounts on the CPU socket.

Unfortunately all of the image links from the mini review I did over at HWC have died over the years, but the mounting system does indeed allow you to rotate the tower 45 deg. assuming there's room for it to clear any motherboard heatsinks.

This is the hyper 212 manual I'm familiar with, fairly certain the mounting mechanism hasn't changed.....

First page of that PDF in the images for AM2/AM3 installation / first panel / far top right you can see the checkmarks beside a, and b which shows the orientation of the hold down bracket for NS or EW.

as long as it mounts nicely (even pressure, not rubbing against anything) it doesn't really matter what direction the fan points

Shouldn't matter, the takeaway from the image is that the hold down bracket stays in exactly the same orientation you just rotate the HSF 90 deg. so that the bracket goes around the heatpipes one way and doesn't the other.

If you are unable to change the cooler orientation, mount on the expansion slot side with the fan pushing air thru the cooling fins. (There should be an airflow direction arrow on the fan casing.)

In order to change the cooler's orientation you will need to remove it from the cpu by unscrewing it from its mounting bracket and GENTLY working it off. Then remove the mounting bracket. Rotate the mounting bracket adjusting as necessary and screw it back in. Then remount the cooling tower.

Before remounting the cooler you will have to VERY GENTLY clean off any thermal compound residue from the top of the cpu and underside of the cooling tower base. This can be done using rubbing (isopropyl) alcohol or ArticClean and a lint free cotton cloth. Once that is done, you will have to apply a small amount of new thermal compound (you may have to buy some) to the top of the cpu. Only then can the cooler be reattached.

Numerous approaches to applying thermal compound. Some like a domino 5 pattern. Some like a larger dab in the center of the cpu. Some like a thin line that is spread out with a credit card or other hardish surface. Several other approaches. Epic wars have been fought over the topic. The consensus is not to apply too much compound, i.e. it shouldn't leak out the side when the cooler is mounted and screwed down. I currently favor the domino 5 pattern of small dots.

The socket mounting points aren't square on am4, unlike intel. so you can only mount it one way.

Can you take a picture of your setup? I've done probably hundreds of H212 on AMD boards and I don't recall any issues with fan orientation. They are typically installed so the fan blows from the front of the case towards the back.

Edit: Found this video, maybe it'll help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tIUNh_vEew

The mounting bracket is versatile, it let's you mount the heatsink either vertically or horizontally.

Unless something has drastically changed in a way I can't physically imagine this is simply untrue. AM3 wasn't square either, but as per the image I posted above the heatsink can be installed in either orientation.

It's the heatsink itself that rotates, not the mounting bracket. The problem with the image is that they printed both images with the HSF facing the same direction rather than leaving the hold down bracket facing the same direction. I think that's what prevents folks from understanding how it works.
